The International Olympic Committee (IOC) members elected the French Alps as the host of the Winter Games 2030. This decision was taken at the 142nd IOC Session in Paris on July 24.
The IOC Executive Board put forward a proposal to this effect in June. However, the members’ vote is subject to the submission of the Games Delivery Guarantee. This involves financial guarantees to cover any potential economic shortfall of the host city’s Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG). It also ensures that the OCOG can deliver the Games in compliance with Olympic Host Contract requirements and fulfil all of its financial obligations.
It is stated that this Guarantee has to be received from the Prime Minister before October 1 of this year, and should be ratified by the French Parliament by March 1, 2025.
President Emanuel Macron affirmed the French nation’s full commitment and pledged to ask the incoming Prime Minister to prioritise both this guarantee and an Olympic law within the new government’s agenda. The next Prime Minister is expected to be appointed by the President after the conclusion of Paris 2024.
The signed copy of the Olympic Host Contract submitted prior to the IOC session will not be counter-signed by the IOC until the timelines set for receipt and ratification of the Guarantee are adhered to.
