Kochi Tuskers Case: BCCI Secures Interim Relief Ahead of Sept 17 Appeal Hearing

On July 25, 2025, the Bombay High Court granted interim relief to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in connection with the arbitral awards of over Rs 538 crores, issued in 2015 in favour of the owners of the now-defunct IPL team Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

The relief came from a Division Bench hearing interim applications filed by BCCI, which filed arbitration appeals last month after the Single Judge Bench dismissed its petitions and upheld the arbitral awards on June 17, 2025 (Click here to read our update on the June 17 decision).

Through the present applications, BCCI sought an ad-interim stay on the operation and implementation of the June 17 judgment, and continuation of the conditional stay of the arbitral award until final disposal of the appeals. Kochi Cricket Private Limited (KCPL) and Rendezvous Sports World (RSW), the award-holders, opposed this prayer, suggesting an early disposal of the arbitration appeals and that, during that period, they will not avail of the permission granted by the Single Judge Bench to withdraw the amounts deposited by BCCI.

As both sides agreed to an expedited hearing, the Division Bench scheduled the final hearing of the appeals for September 17, 2025. Meanwhile, the liberty granted to KCPL and RSW to withdraw the money deposited by BCCI has been further deferred by eight weeks, in addition to the earlier six-week deferral ordered by the Single Judge.
