On 29 March 2026, the Telangana Government announced a policy initiative to facilitate public employment opportunities for meritorious sportspersons, as part of its broader effort to institutionalise athlete welfare and strengthen the State’s sporting ecosystem.
The initiative is based on the existing Telangana Sports Policy, 2025, under which Pillar 5: Skills Development and Career Pathways clearly establishes that career pathways and post-retirement support for athletes and coaches will be ensured, along with long-term employment and opportunities in the sports sector.
Further, the Sports Authority of Telangana (SATG) is mandated under the policy to create and update guidelines, on a case-by-case basis, to provide employment opportunities for athletes who have achieved significant success in the Olympics, World Championships, World Cups, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and other similar competitions.
Also, the policy states that the Government will introduce a sportsperson-oriented recruitment scheme. This indicates a shift away from reliance on traditional quota-based appointments towards a more structured and potentially centralised recruitment model tailored specifically to sportspersons.
Thus, the recent announcement by the Telangana Chief Minister signals a step forward, as the government is also developing the Gachibowli Sports Complex at an estimated cost of Rs.700 crore.
However, the policy maintains a regulated, performance-linked approach. By limiting employment opportunities to athletes with “significant success” and implementing it through guidelines rather than automatic entitlements, it seeks to balance incentivisation with administrative feasibility and fairness.
