Popular Australian cricket podcast The Grade Cricketer (TGC) has been forced to remove all its Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025-related videos from YouTube and other social media platforms after receiving a legal notice from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The podcast, hosted by Australian cricket writers Sam Perry and Ian Higgins, had been producing a special series titled “The Big IPL Breakfast” during the 18th season of the IPL. However, the BCCI objected to the podcast’s use of IPL logos, team names, and still images, claiming the content was “commercial in nature” rather than editorial. This distinction triggered a takedown demand.
As a result, Perry and Higgins were compelled to delete hundreds of videos from YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X to avoid possible account suspensions. While cricket boards have strict restrictions on the use of video clips, BCCI’s latest stance on the usage of images reflects a new trend.
On a lighter note, in a recent episode where TGC discussed Rajasthan Royals’ star Vaibhav Suryavanshi and his record-breaking century against Gujarat Titans, due to the new limitations, the podcast used a hand-drawn sketch of Suryavanshi with a bat, created by Perry’s children, instead of any official photos or footage from the match.
