The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has granted provisional National Sports Federation (NSF) recognition to the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), a move seen as a boost to India’s Formula One ambitions. FMSCI had applied for recognition on June 11, 2026; the provisional recognition is conditional on the federation amending its constitution/MoA to align with the National Sports Governance Act, 2025 and its rules within stipulated timelines.
This recognition gives FMSCI a larger mandate to promote and develop motor sports in India, granted after the Ministry relaxed three requirements under the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011: affiliation of at least two-thirds of States/UTs, 50% district-level association affiliation with the concerned State/UT unit, and the restriction confining federation membership to the corresponding State/UT.
It is also subject to continued observance of a set of terms and conditions issued by the Ministry, including the election of office-bearers in accordance with Ministry norms, alignment of FMSCI’s constitution/bye-laws with the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, annual audit of mercantile-system accounting, affiliation of State/UT bodies, and compliance with Ministry guidelines on championships, RTI, age fraud, POSH, and anti-doping. Recognition may be withdrawn for violating any of these terms, breaching FMSCI’s own constitution, non-compliance with government directions, improper functioning, misrepresentation in obtaining recognition, or loss of affiliation with an international federation.
The F1 Push
The recognition follows sustained talks between the Ministry and FMSCI on a roadmap for F1’s return, with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announcing a dedicated Task Force to assess the feasibility of hosting premier motorsport events in India.
The Task Force will evaluate the economic, tourism, and investment case for hosting major motorsport events, and identify infrastructure and operational needs, feeding into a broader policy framework for the sport. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has acknowledged strong interest in India but has not provided a timeline. According to an F1 statement in December last year, the fanbase in India stood at 79 million, and in less than six months, it has grown to 98 million.
