Key sports, including hockey, badminton, wrestling, and cricket, have been removed from the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2026, which will be held in Glasgow, owing to costs and logistics concerns. Shooting and archery were also eliminated from the last games, held in Birmingham in 2022, but India still managed to rank fourth with 61 medals. Further removal of key sports might significantly affect the country’s medal count.
The trimmed roster of 10 sports will take place at four venues across the host city, with around 3000 athletes participating from around the world. The 2026 games were initially scheduled to happen in Victoria, Australia, but the heightened projected cost led them to claw back, for which they had to pay a hefty compensation.
