Recognition Dispute: Delhi HC Reserves Order in Pickleball Case

The Delhi High Court has reserved its judgment on the All India Pickleball Association’s (AIPA) plea challenging the recognition granted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) to the newly formed Indian Pickleball Association (IPA). [1]

IPA approached the ministry for recognition as a National Sports Federation (NSF) following the successful hosting of the inaugural World Championship in November, featuring participation from over 17 countries, 55 international players, and more than 500 Indian athletes.

Subsequently, recognition was granted on April 25. It is said that the body will remain under observation with respect to compliance with the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011 (Sports Code), and for two years, it will not be eligible for funding under the scheme of assistance of the NSF.

AIPA, formed in 2008, contends that the recognition is in violation of the Sports Code, which requires a minimum of three years’ existence for eligibility. In contrast, IPA was registered only in November last year.

AIPA President Arvind Prabhoo has raised concerns about transparency and fairness in the ministry’s decision.
