Tamil Nadu to Establish High-Speed EV Charging Infrastructure for Commercial Fleets

The Government of Tamil Nadu has unveiled plans to establish high-speed Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure for commercial vehicles along key highways, with the first facility to be set up in Ulundurpet.

The initiative was announced at the Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 held in Chennai on July 31, 2025 & August 1, 2025. This development forms part of the State’s broader strategy to enhance electric mobility, particularly in the bus and goods carrier segments.

The proposed charging infrastructure is being jointly developed by the Department of Energy and Transport of the Government of Tamil Nadu, with active support from the Industries Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

The proposed infrastructure will enable 70% charging within 15 minutes and complete charging within 30 minutes thereby enabling intercity and long-haul EV travel for buses and goods carriers. This marks a strategic shift from the earlier focus on two-wheelers and passenger cars to now targeting commercial fleets.

To further anchor investments, the State is convening a mini-investor conclave, “TN Rising,” at Tuticorin next week, expected to witness Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signings in the automobile and renewable energy sectors. Additionally, Guidance Tamil Nadu, the nodal agency for investment promotion, is examining the establishment of an Automobile Centre of Excellence to foster R&D, skill development, and innovation in EV manufacturing and allied industries.

This development aligns with the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy, 2023, which aims to position the State as a national leader in EV manufacturing and allied services.

For stakeholders in the automotive, infrastructure, and energy sectors, these policy signals represent opportunities for:

  1. Participation in PPP-based charging infrastructure projects.
  2. Potential incentives under the Tamil Nadu EV Policy.
  3. Collaborations in R&D through the proposed Centre of Excellence.

Tamil Nadu’s initiative to prioritize high-speed charging for commercial vehicles represents a crucial step in unlocking the bus and goods carrier EV ecosystem. The combination of policy incentives, PPP frameworks, and complementary investment promotion measures offers a regulatory and commercial landscape conducive to both domestic and foreign investors.
