USA Cricket’s Strategic Move: New CEO Appointed to Meet ICC Requirements

USA Cricket has appointed Johnathan Atkeison, former Chief Operating Officer at USA Rugby, as its new CEO, effective August 1.

Last month, USA Cricket and Cricket Chile were formally put on notice for non-compliance with the ICC’s membership criteria. Twelve months’ time was given to rectify this non-compliance. It was stated that these members lacked “fit-for purpose detailed governance and administrative structure and systems.”

The appointment of a new CEO is seen as a crucial step in preventing expulsion as an ICC Associate nation. In addition to the leadership gap, another major issue highlighted was the failure to adhere to the governance norms established by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).

Each sports governing body must gain National Governing Body (NGB) status for inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The decision to add cricket, along with four other sports, to the programme for LA 2028 was made during the 141st IOC Session last October.
