NHAI Signs MoU with Norwegian Geotechnical Institute

National Highways Authority of India (“NHAI”) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (“MoU”) with Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (“NGI”) in Oslo to strengthen technical expertise in the development and monitoring of national highway infrastructure projects, particularly in geologically sensitive and challenging terrains.

The collaboration is aimed at leveraging NGI’s specialised expertise in geotechnical engineering, tunnel engineering, slope stability analysis, and natural hazard mitigation to support the planning, design, assessment, and monitoring of highway infrastructure projects in India. Under the MoU, NGI will provide consultancy services relating to tunnel site characterisation, feasibility studies, preparation of Detailed Project Reports (“DPRs”), and structural assessment and safety audits of operational tunnels.

In addition, the partnership envisages the analysis and interpretation of InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) data for slope monitoring and the development of early warning systems aimed at improving infrastructure resilience and operational safety. These initiatives are expected to strengthen monitoring mechanisms for highway projects situated in vulnerable and high-risk terrains.

The MoU also places significant emphasis on institutional capacity building and knowledge exchange through joint research and development initiatives focussed on natural hazard reduction and sustainable infrastructure engineering. Both organisations are expected to collaborate through technical workshops, seminars, specialised training programmes and publication of technical literature to enhance professional and engineering capabilities within the highway sector.

The agreement will remain valid for a period of five years and will operate on a non-exclusive and project-specific basis, allowing both entities flexibility to engage independently on other infrastructure assignments.

The collaboration further highlights the growing role of international technical partnerships in advancing sustainable infrastructure development and enhancing resilience standards across India’s transportation infrastructure ecosystem.
