Recognition Withdrawal: IBA Files Appeal with Swiss Federal Tribunal

In a press release dated July 2, 2024, the International Boxing Association (IBA) announced that it had filed an appeal with the Swiss Federal Tribunal challenging the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirming the withdrawal of its recognition.

Earlier this year, CAS confirmed the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) June 2023 decision to withdraw IBA’s recognition. The CAS Panel’s award noted IBA’s failure to fulfil the conditions laid down for its recognition, which included changing its process relating to referees and judges (R&J), increasing financial transparency, etc.

IBA expressed disappointment at the CAS Panel’s award and emphasised that the strides made by the Association were disregarded. It asserted that the IOC never provided the IBA with a coherent roadmap or established a direct communication channel.

Weeks after the July press release was issued, IBA unveiled an open letter addressed by IBA President Umar Kremlev and Secretary General & CEO Chris Roberts, OBE to IOC members. This letter called for the resignation of IOC President Thomas Bach, citing abuse of power and personal bias towards IBA.
