India has submitted its letter of intent to host the 2036 Summer Olympics and Paralympics to the International Olympic Committee’s Future Host Commission. In preparation for this, Indian officials attended the IOC’s executive program and observer program.
The games are scheduled to be hosted in Los Angeles, United States, in 2028 and Brisbane, Australia, in 2032; however, the commission is yet to finalise the host for the 2036 edition. Along with India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Hungary, Indonesia, and Qatar have also shared the intent to host. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) was set up in July 2023 to oversee the planning and execution of Olympic-standard infrastructure in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
The next step involves a feasibility assessment, which moves the process to the continuous dialogue stage and then proceeds to the targeted dialogue stage, which involves extensive consultation with various stakeholders and finalization of the decision. A slew of operational requirements including climate positive commitments have to be met by a host country to be able to go through the pledge of hosting an event of such massive scale.
